THE ADDRESS BOOK bought by Fourth Estate

THE ADDRESS BOOK, a new book by former Guardian Science Editor Tim Radford, has been bought after an auction by Fourth Estate.

When Tim Radford was a boy, he liked to write his address in the front pages of his school exercise books. He`d start with the number of his house, the street and the city where he lived, and then go on to name the country, the continent, the hemisphere, the Earth, the solar system, the galaxy, and finally the universe itself.

Inspired by this boyhood ritual, each chapter of THE ADDRESS BOOK will correspond to a line of an address, starting with the house - the way a house affects the identity of its inhabitants, how the house is an expression of history and geography - moving onto towns - why we associate ourselves with one place rather than another, how we think about urban space, why towns we`ve never visited can be just as central to our identities as the towns we were born in -  and so on. Chapter by chapter the camera will pull back, the scale will grow larger, and THE ADDRESS BOOK will use popular science and the history of ideas to answer some of the world`s oldest questions - Who am I? Where am I? How did I get here? The view from its final chapters will be amazing.

Fourth Estate will publish a special children`s version of the book simultaneously.
