Stephanie Zia was born in Dorset in 1955. In 1972 she joined the Russian Section of the BBC World Service. Moving to television, she spent fifteen years in the Music and Arts Department, working on arts documentaries for Arena, Omnibus and Bookmark. She began writing after directing her first film for BBC Bristol, 10 x 10: Applause. She lives in West London.
