Slavenka Drakulić was born in Croatia in 1949. She has written four novels – HOLOGRAMS OF FEAR, MARBLE SKIN, THE TASTE OF A MAN and, most recently, AS IF I AM NOT THERE – and four non-fiction books – BALKAN EXPRESS, HOW WE SURVIVED COMMUNISM AND EVEN LAUGHED, CAFÉ EUROPA and THEY WOULD NEVER HURT A FLY – all of which have been translated into many languages. THEY WOULD NEVER HURT A FLY, a collection of essays about the Balkan War Crimes Trials at the Hague, was published last year by Time Warner in the UK and Viking Penguin in the US. She is working on her new non-fiction book, about the concept of altruism, and in particular her own experience of receiving a kindey transplant because of the altruistic gift of a kindey from a living donor.
