Barnard is an editor, journalist, radio broadcaster and novelist.
Her first novel POKER FACE (Virago), was the winner of a Betty Trask award.
Her second, THE PLEASURE DOME, was described by Helen Dunmore as: 'heart-rending to read but also so honest and so buoyant in its language that it swept me through. And funny too'; the Observer's literary editor picked THE PLEASURE DOME for his Best of Summer Reading and said, 'Barnard is one to watch'.
Both novels have been set texts on the Middlesex Creative Writing MA. Of Barnard's two Virago travel books, one was picked by Frank Barrett of the Mail on Sunday as one of the 5 best travel books available and both were translated into several languages including Italian and Japanese.
Barnard's journalism and reviewing has featured in papers including the Guardian, the Independent on Sunday and the TLS. She is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 as a presenter and producer.
Her latest book, THE BOOK OF FRIENDSHIP, was published by Little, Brown in September 2011.
She lives in London.
